We got behind the scene to find out what fuels John’s inspiration to join Insight Vacations, and his passion as one of the leading leaders in the luxury travel industry.
1. What inspired you to join Insight Vacations?
I started my career in the travel industry when I moved to London in 1979. My flatmate at that time was with Contiki Holidays and he knew I love travelling and love meeting people, so he encouraged me to apply to be a European tour manager. I joined Insight Vacations in 1985 as a tour director and then marketing manager, before heading the brand in 1997.
One of the goals in the creation of Insight Vacations in 1979 was to better the world by bringing people together. I’m proud to be leading a team of knowledgeable and passionate staff that help carefully plan the travel itineraries to ensure that while our guests travel in style, there are signature experiences that allow them to go deeper in the places they visit, opportunities to interact with the locals and hear their stories, making their journey with us much more immersive.
2. The definition of luxury travel has changed in recent years. What do you think luxury travel means today?
Previously, luxury travel just meant staying in 5 star hotels. Now, luxury travel means going on holiday with unique experiences that are not accessible to everyone.
It may not always be easy to access – for example, in Bhutan, it can be quite a hike to reach the famed Tiger’s Nest, also known as the holiest site in the country, where it sits on a rocky cliff 3,000 feet above the Paro valley in Bhutan.
3. Asia is indeed an exciting yet booming travel arena. Tell us about your plans in Asia.
We seek to offer unique experiences that will create memorable travel moments. For Asia, we are focused on offering quality itineraries that go deeper in a destination rather than expanding the number of itineraries
4. In terms of luxury travel, how do you differ your brand from others?
We seek to create connections between our guests and their travel destination. For our Luxury Gold experiences, we have Traveling Concierges opening doors around the world to places and people most wouldn’t dream possible. Luxury Gold takes care of everything while guests relax and enjoy Exclusive VIP Events, epicurean dining, authentic regional cuisine and handpicked hotels that offer the finest.
5. Tell us the most amazing thing you’ve created for a customer.
I think it is as simple as us making the introductions to meet and enjoy hands on activities with local people, from whom our guests will learn so much about each unique place we visit. To understand perspectives through their eyes, as a shared experience, brings deep learning and rich fulfillment. To have the opportunity and access to meet art experts, artisans, chefs, growers and specialists in so many fields is something you simply couldn’t arrange yourself.
6. What will be the future for Insight Vacations?
For Insight as a Premium and Luxury operator it is most definitely a case of ‘right place, right time’. Travellers are very knowledgeable and discerning today and want to be treated as individuals and get the best service. Insight provides the highest quality, the most authentic experiences, amazing smaller group personal service and the flexibility and freedom that is simply not there with other vacations.
